10 Sep The project LIFE Regenera Limia initiates the action B3
This September began the performance of the action B3 of the project LIFE Regenera Limia, promoted by the Hydrographic Confederation of the Miño Sil. Said works centre in the recovery of the alluvial plain of the ancient meander of the Limia river in order to:
• Enhance the natural river effect that causes the reduction of the presence of nutrients causing the recirculation of water by the old bed of the Limia River and recovering its floodplain in wet periods.
• Restore to a favorable conservation status the natural habitats included in Annex I to Directive 92/43/EC present in the floodplains of the “Bidueiral de San Lorenzo”.
• Restore to a favorable conservation status the habitats of wild flora and fauna species included in Directive 92/43/EC and the habitats of bird species included in Directive 2009/147/EC.
• Hydraulic connection of the Limia River with its floodplains through the old river course.
• Environmental conditioning of the old riverbed enhancing the functionality of its riparian forest.
• Naturalization of small temporary ponds on the river’s floodplains to create microhabitats.
So far we have carried out:
• Silvicultural treatments on the riverbed’s vegetation.
• The opening of the old riverbed following the course that was still preserved, and new openings in the areas where the old course was totally blurred by human action.
In the coming weeks we will proceed to run the water passages that connect the new recovered river section to the “Canal da Lagoa de Antela”, to allow the free flow of water down the recovered river, and the flooding of the floodplain.
