21 Oct The Regenerate Limia LIFE project, promoted by CHMS, launches action B4 focused on the “Canal da Lagoa da Antela”
Action B4 began on 15 September 2016 for the recovery and integration into the hydrological cycle of former sand extraction mines for their conversion into a lagoon system that enhances the purification ability of the river course. Specifically, the objectives to be achieved are:
• Favoring the existence of suitable habitats for the species already present in the A Limia SPA and potential new species.
• Reducing the presence of nutrients through the plant’s roots, by installing floating islands and through the revegetation of the banks.
• Optimizing the function of the pools to collaborate in the carbon sink effect and improve the region’s adaptation to climate change.
It is estimated that the execution of the works will take place until the end of October.
Later, during the winter, periodic analytical tests of the water quality will be performed at the entrance and exit of the pools in order to verify the reduction of nutrient concentrations in the waters after passing through them.
